Back in 2012 I published a blog post called, Must-know tips and tricks for Kindle Paperwhite newbies, which I updated a few times up until January, 2016.
However, the Kindle software updates starting Kindle Software Update 5.7.3 and newer have brought some major changes and new features to all of Kindle e-Readers, including Kindle Paperwhite, Kindle Voyage, Kindle Oasis and Kindle.
It is why I have decided to compile this second part of the must-know tips and tricks for Kindle Paperwhite, which can also be applied to Kindle Voyage, Kindle Oasis and Kindle as they share the same firmware version (the latest is Kindle Software Update 5.8.9 as of May 9th, 2017).
So without further ado, let’s go ahead and start with this must-know tips and tricks for Amazon Kindle Paperwhite newbies – part 2. It goes without saying that this is an ongoing blog post and will regularly be updated.
1. How to determine the current software version on your Kindle
There are two easiest ways to determine the current software version on your Kindle e-reader as follows:
1.1.1. From Home, tap the Menu icon, and then tap Settings.
1.1.2. Tap the Device Options, and then tap the Device Info.
1.2.1. From Home, tap the Menu icon, and then tap Settings.
1.2.2. From Settings, tap the Menu icon again, and then tap Device Info.
2. How to navigate your Kindle
As mentioned above the Kindle Software Update 5.7.3 and newer have brought some major changes and new features, which completely changed the look and feel of your Kindle. Navigating your Kindle is now easy and clear (see image above):
2.1. Home: This Home icon is your starting point to view the content of your Kindle: Your Library, Your Reading Lists, and Special Offers. Always tap the Home icon to go back from browsing on your Kindle.
2.2. Back: Use this icon to go back to previous page.
2.3. Quick Settings: Tap this icon to quickly configure some of the setting (see 3. How to navigate the Quick Settings).
2.4. Goodreads: Tap this icon to go to your Goodreads account on Kindle.
2.5. Store: Tap this icon to go to Kindle Store: Browse categories, Editor’s Picks, Deals, Prime Reading and more.
2.6. Search: Use this Search icon to search for a specific item: Kindle books, Periodicals or Documents.
2.7. Menu: Tap this icon to view your Kindle’s Menus, including Settings.
3. How to navigate the Quick Settings
The Quick Settings unables you to configure the followings (see image above):
3.1. How to switch WiFi On and Off: Wifi and Airplane Mode work the opposite way to each other:
3.1.1. Tap the Airplane Mode Off to switch the Wifi On.
3.1.2. Tap the Airplane Mode On to switch the Wifi Off.
3.2. How to sync your Kindle: Tap the Sync My Kindle icon to sync your content, your device and your settings both on your Kindle and your Manage Your Content and Devices on Amazon.com.
3.3. How to configure the settings: Tap the All Settings icon to configure your Settings on your Kindle.
3.4. How to adjust Brightness: Swipe the brightness bar from 1 – 24 to adjust the brightness of your Kindle, or tap the Auto Brightness On and Off to adjust it automatically.
4. How to personalize the device name on your Kindle
Giving a name to your Kindle device, especially if you own several Kindle devices, makes it easy to distinguish one Kindle from the other (see image above). Your personalized device name will appear on the Home page on your Kindle, and on your Manage Your Content and Devices at Amazon.com.
4.1. From Home tap Settings, and then tap My Account on your Kindle.
4.2. Tap Device Name, type your device name, and tap Save to save it or tap Cancel to cancel it.
Please note that you can change your device name anytime your want, and you can change it right on your Kindle or on your Manage Your Content and Devices at Amazon.com.
5. How to add personal information
Adding a personal information is of course a personal choice. Perhaps your want to identify your Kindle as your work Kindle, your travel Kindle or your bedtime story Kindle (see image above).
5.1. From Home tap Settings, and then tap My Account on your Kindle.
5.2. Tap Personal Info, type your personal information, and tap Save to save it or tap Cancel to cancel it.
6. How to connect and manage your social networks
Connecting your social networks to your Amazon account, enables you to seamlessly share your favorite Kindle book excerpts with your friends on Goodreads, Facebook and Twitter.
There are two ways to connect your social networks to your Amazon account:
6.1. Connect your social networks on your Kindle:
6.1.1. From Home tap Settings, and then tap My Account on your Kindle.
6.1.2. Tap Social Networks, and connect your social network one by one (see image above).
6.1.3. Tap the Goodreads, Facebook and/or Twitter icon to connect them to your Amazon account.
6.1.4. Fill out your social network credentials, and then tap the NEXT button to continue.
6.1.5. Tap the Link button (see image below) to continue connecting your social networks to your Amazon account.
6.2. Connect your Facebook and Twitter on Your Social Settings at Amazon.com, and connect your Goodreads account on Goodreads.com.
7. How to deregister your Kindle
If you, for some reasons, want to deregister your Kindle, it is easily done on your Kindle. Of course, after deregistering you can register your Kindle to another Amazon account as follows:
7.1. From Home tap Settings, and then tap My Account on your Kindle.
7.2. Tap Deregister Device, and then tap the Deregister button to continue registering your Kindle device or tap the Cancel button to cancel it.
8. How to manage Special Offers on your Kindle
If you originally purchased your Kindle device with Special Offers, which is $20.00 cheaper than a Kindle Paperwhite Without Special Offers, you will notice the Special Offers on the Home page on your Kindle.
You can manage how Special Offers appear on your Kindle as follows:
8.1. From Home tap Settings, and then tap My Account on your Kindle.
8.2. Tap Special Offers, swipe the Special Offer Filtering On and Off to hide offers containing images that may not be suitable for all audiences (see image above).
8.3. Tap Special Offers, swipe the Special Offer Recommendations On and Off to display personalized offers based on items you’ve purchased or browsed (see image above).
9. How to manage your Send-to-Kindle email
With your Send-to-Kindle email (see image above), you can send documents to your Kindle as an email attachment. You can manage your Send-to-Kindle E-Mail Settings on your Manage Your Content and Devices at Amazon.com.
