There is absolutely no denying that the summertime is almost over. In fact, according to the latest local weather forecast, today is the very last day of a sunny, hot warm summer day this year.
Afterward, there will be a lot of rain and thunderstorms across the country. There is also a high probability of small hail and gusty winds this weekend. Unfortunately, I no longer have chilling time or gardening time on the balcony.
You might imagine how glad I am that I have had a small container herb garden, which can easily be moved inside the house. I am also delighted that I have succeeded in turning my old fish tank into a thriving indoor herb garden.
If you have an old fish tank and want to turn it into an indoor herb garden, please keep reading because this blog post is definitely for you. Let’s go ahead and get started with the following simple steps on how to turn an old fish tank into an indoor herb garden:
What you need:
- An old fish tank of all sizes (mine is 36 x 22 x 26 cm = 14 x 8.6 x 10 inch).
- Some clay pebbles (enough to cover the bottom of your old fish tank).
- Some organic potting soil (enough to cover 1/3 to 1/2 of your old fish tank).
- Some of your favorite culinary herb seeds (mine are basil, rocket, parsley, lettuce, and other easy-to-grow herb seeds).
- A pair of gardening gloves.
- A garden tool set.
- Some water.
What you need to do:
- Wash the fish tank thoroughly using natural dish soap.
- (Air) dry the fish tank.
- Cover the bottom of the fish tank with the clay pebbles for drainage.
- Put 90% of the potting soil into the fish tank.
- Moisten the potting soil lightly but thoroughly with some water.
- Spread the herb seeds over the potting soil.
- Cover the herb seed with 10% of the potting soil.
- Place the fish tank where it can get full sunlight (mine is on my windowsill).
- Water them regularly but do not overwater.
Always make sure that your herb garden is free from bugs and other insects. And if you spot them, you can use a homemade natural spray, which contains 1 part of water and 1 part of dish soap to get rid of the bugs and keep your herb garden organic at the same time.
Now, it is time for you to relax and wait until the herb seed starts to grow and is finally ready to be harvested. I am sure you’ll be glad that you’ll have enough herbs and perhaps other vegetables for the whole year long.
